Nan Quan


    In Ming Dynasty, to fight pirates and Japanese invadors, the emperor ordered Shaolin Temple to send worrior monks to Fujian province. And then, Southern Shaolin Temple was ordered construction to settle the monks. On the basis of Shaolin Kungfu, the monks absorbed the traditional martial arts spreading in Southern area of China and created Nanquan. Over many generations, Nanquan has been greatly developed and become a popular civilian sports activity in South of China. The main charactors are firm steps, powerful fists, violent force, less jumps   but more short jabs, swift hands etc.   
              
    Nanquan consists of Hong Family boxing, Liu Family boxing, Cai Family boxing and Yongchunquan etc. As early as in 1960s, Nanquan has been listed as a contest item on Chinese Wushu Formal Competition and in 1991, Nanquan was listed as a contest item in first International Wushu Competition.
    As a very important part of Chinese traditional martial arts, Nanquan has been well_known by more and more Wushu amateurs.
